To Miss Norris,
ReplyDeleteI think that kids click is the worst website in the world because it dosn't let you search things.
I found out that D-Day was on June 6, 1944.
D-Day was the name given to the first day of a massive invasion of France called ‘Operation Overlord’. It happened on June 6 1944 during World War Two.
The d in D-Day stands for..
"D-Day" and "H-Hour" are general terms used for the day and hour to mark the beginning of an important event.
By far the most well-known D-Day is June 6, 1944, when the Allied invasion of German-occupied France began in WWII.
The "D" was used to mark the day that a particular operation was to begin. Each operation had a D-day and an H-hour.
Because D-Day of Operation Overlord was the largest amphibious assault in military history, it became the popular expression to refer to June 6, 1944, and was not used to mark the first day of an operation thereafter - as far as I know. It basically took on the persona that the phrase "9/11" has taken to refer to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
General Eisenhwer and Winston Churchill may have tried to give the "D" an actual meaning for the benefit of the press and the civilians, but previous to that, it did not stand for anything except "day" (as noted previously).
D-Day happned...
In November, 1943, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met together in Teheran, Iran, to discuss military strategy and post-war Europe. Ever since the Soviet Union had entered the war, Stalin had been demanding that the Allies open-up a second front in Europe. Churchill and Roosevelt argued that any attempt to land troops in Western Europe would result in heavy casualties. Until the Soviet's victory at Stalingrad in January, 1943, Stalin had feared that without a second front, Germany would defeat them.
The Affect of War on the City
The World Wars
During World War One the Government considered Portsmouth Royal Dockyard a target for espionage and tightened security with extra Metropolitan Police. The town (Portsmouth did not become a city until 1926) was also target for German air raids during both wars. During World War Two Portsmouth experienced a blitz attack when the Germans subjected the city to a massive bombing campaign.

ReplyDeleteThe military started planning the details of the invasion before they knew the date when it would take place. In order to organise things like when the troop ships should leave England they referred to it as D-Day. It was an invasion, the biggest one in history. It's a key date in the story of the second world war.
The whole operation was codenamed Overlord. It happened on 6 June 1944 after five years of war with Germany.
A massive military force set out from England towards France. It was going to overthrow Nazi Germany and its leader Adolf Hitler. The Nazis had taken over nearly the whole of Europe.
